Degenderettes was created to build community programs to solve gender-based injustices that are being overlooked by other organizations. These programs are designed to be functioning models for movements that will extend beyond Degenderettes’ immediate reach.
Degenderettes was founded in 2019 in San Francisco by a handful of community organizers who needed more tools and resources to keep a myriad of ad hoc projects going. Our leadership is comprised of people who have been personally impacted by gender injustice, who wish to help others navigate their own circumstances.
Degenderettes is not interested in prioritizing problems based on their fundraising potential or other top-down priorities. Our method is to first identify an authentic need by talking to members of a community that has been marginalized by gender, and asking how they would solve their problem if they had more help. We choose how to invest ourselves based on efficient use of community resources, whether it can be replicated as a grassroots movement by other organizers, and the realistic worth for the people we are serving.
